Xbox Live Games with Gold

The PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection often struggles at this time of year, and now Xbox Live's Games with Gold is also suffering the same fate. That's because the publishers want you to be buying all of the latest games, dropping huge bucks on the latest DLC, and throwing all your money at anything that is "new."

Why would they want you playing old games for free? Time is money!

Anyway, the Xbox One starts the month off with Pneuma: Breath of Life available for all of November. I've never heard of it, but the Steam score isn't all that great. Halfway through the month, gamers can pick up Knight Squad for free from Nov. 16 until Dec. 15. This one has a bit better of a reputation on its community page, so you might want to check it out. It could be a nice little indie hit to get you started.

For the Xbox 360, DiRT 3 will be available for the first half of the month, just in case you haven't invested in a next-gen racer yet. And for the second half of the month from Nov. 16, Dungeon Siege III will be your freebie. It's supposedly not that great of a game, but there's always something about Obsidian games that I love, even the ones that aren't well received.

Both were released in 2011, so that might tell you something about how enthusiastic Microsoft was this month with Games with Gold.

If you're disappointed with these relatively underwhelming choices, don't worry too much. Games with Gold will pick up again when millions of new fans turn on their consoles Christmas morning, and Microsoft wants to start selling them Gold memberships. January will be solid enough.
