Game of Thrones is known for being many things, one of which is its epic scale. From the Battle of the Bastards to the Battle of Blackwater, epic battles happen often in the series, contributing to its infamous production budget. With season eight being it last, it seems the series shot for the moon.
In an Instagram post, Game of Thrones assistant director Jonathan Quinlan revealed a specific battle scene for the upcoming eighth season took a stunning 55 nights to shoot. The caption reads, “Says it all. 55 consecutive nights. 11 weeks. 3 locations. You’ll never again see anything like it.”
The post has since been deleted and the account gone private. Game of Thrones relies on a strict gag order so as to not reveal any details of upcoming plot points or scenes. The post itself didn’t reveal much other than how massive the scene is going to be, but that was apparently still too much information disclosed.
This upcoming scene is supposed to obliterate the notion of epic. To give the massive shoot some context, it was twice as long as it took to shoot the Battle of the Bastards in season six and Battle of Goldroad in season seven. Heck, that’s even longer than some movies get to complete their entire shoot.
I understand why the powers that be came down quickly on the post, but if anything, it just ramped up anticipation for the eighth season of Game of Thrones to the max.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2019 for Game of Thrones to return. In worse news, the season will be split up into two parts. That means we may not see this epic battle until 2020. Whoever said patience is a virtue never got hooked on Game of Thrones.
