The 2018 flagship from Samsung shouldn’t be announced until March or April, but two major components for the Galaxy S9 are already official.
Both new and existing products are receiving CES 2018 Innovation Awards despite the trade show happening in January; however, it’s giving us an opportunity to understand what processor and camera the Galaxy S9 will have. Samsung’s upcoming in-house components are receiving these early awards, and the company even shared some details on them.
If you’re in the United States, it’ll probably be the soon-to-be-announced Snapdragon 845 running the show. Elsewhere, though, the Galaxy S9 will have Samsung’s Exynos 9 Series 9810. It’s a processor with “3rd-generation custom CPU cores, upgraded GPU, and gigabit LTE modem with industry-first 6CA support.” Samsung notes that it’s built on 10nm process technology, but we don’t have any additional details.
Another Samsung-made component for the Galaxy S9 will be the ISOCELL Slim 2X7. Since cameras are pretty intricate, let’s have Samsung explain what it’s all about:
“Samsung ISOCELL Slim 2X7 is a 24 megapixel image sensor with 0.9μm pixels, the smallest pixel in the industry, plus Tetracell and remosaic technology to simulate bigger pixel performance. The small 0.9μm pixel size enables a 24Mp image sensor to be fitted in a thinner camera module, allowing premium smartphones to offer high resolution cameras in a very slim and elegant design.”
The average consumer should expect the usual upgrades for the camera. The Galaxy S9 will probably be able to take sharper pictures, manage low-light environments better, and focus on objects quicker. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 take really good pictures today, so it’s hard to think just how much better the company can make this component.
Samsung will likely provide more details on the processor and camera at CES 2018 next year, and then we’ll see the Galaxy S9 a few months after.
