The iPhone 7 Plus’ dual-camera setup represents the best of what Apple’s engineers can do, offering features like optical image stabilization, a f/1.8 aperture, and a Portrait mode that creates a neat depth-of-field effect. So, how does the Galaxy S8’s new shooter stack up? We’ll let you decide.
As we’ve done in the past, we walked around our office park snapping photos with both devices doing our best to match the same angles, framing, and lighting. This isn’t a scientific test by any means, but it represents how most consumers will use their device. Aim, snap, repeat.
Both cameras were on auto with HDR features turned on—this is the experience you’d get right out of the box.
The iPhone 7 sports a 12-megapixel camera with an aperture of f/1.8, and a feature that allows users to utilize the device’s telephoto lens. We didn’t use the feature during this comparison, but buyers may want to bear that in mind.
The Galaxy S8 comes with a 12-megapixel “Dual Pixel” camera, with software enhancements Samsung says will dramatically improve picture quality. The aperture is a tad wider than the iPhone’s at f/1.7, and it includes the usual trimmings of phase detection auto focus and optical image stabilization.
On paper, the cameras match up pretty well. But it really comes down to software optimization that sets these two apart. As with Samsung devices in the past, the Galaxy S8 offers several “pro” features, giving users greater control over settings such as ISO, white balance, and exposure. The iPhone’s stock camera app is much less robust, though it still provides users with control over exposure.
We’ll let you guys judge which photos look best. I do want to say that, as expected, the Galaxy S8 photos look excellent, if a bit oversaturated, and the camera operates quickly. In fact, I don’t think I’ve used a device with a camera that’s so quick to operate. Trust me, that makes a difference when you have a rambunctious kid or pet.
