The Funko booth at Toy Fair 2017, to be blunt, was nearly overwhelming. The sheer volume of product this company has planned for this year would bring most companies to their knees, and it's going to quite possibly make collectors scream for mercy.
Let's start with one of the big guns: Five Nights at Freddy's. It feels like the majority of companies we saw this year at the show had something from this critical and fan hit game, and Funko was no exception. Beyond the usual assortment of Pops, you can also expect plush toys, action figures, drinkware and more. If you love this game there is going to be no shortage of product for you to purchase this year.
Next up was Troll Hunters. The new Guillermo del Toro animated series on Netflix has been well received, and Funko is going to be following closely behind with products for fans to pick up and love.
Again, this year feels very much like an expansion for Funko as it breaks out of the mold of being known solely for its Pop figures. While it has dived into other product categories before, this year it feels like it is going full-throttle. Make no mistake, Pops still make up the lion's share of the product line, but there is no question it is a company that will soon be known for a great many things.
Speaking of Netflix, Stranger Things merchandise is on the way. This surprise hit last summer on the streaming service doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon. With season 2 already being teased with new images, it feels like this quirky little show will be with us for some time to come.
Also from the land of the odd, Funko has picked up the rights to Twin Peaks just in time for the Showtime revival. There will be both Pops and action figures for this property, and, honestly, who isn't going to want a Laura Palmer wrapped in plastic action figure on their desk? Normally during press tours I keep quiet about what I may buy someday, but when I saw the Laura figure… I may have squealed a bit… and then also said "She's dead, Harry. Wrapped in plastic," to my guide.
… Thankfully he laughed instead of staring at me as if I was insane.
From Batman '66 to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, Funko is covering all the different ages of Marvel and DC on the big and small screen this year.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will, of course, be represented as it is expected to be one of the biggest films of the year. Justice League will also have merchandise, but none of it was on display in the showroom quite yet. We would suspect you'll see that more towards this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Spider-Man was all over the Toy Fair this year, and I have a feeling the anticipation for this film is only growing by the minute.
Below you will find even more of what Funko had on display. To give you an idea:
- The 100
- Despicable Me 3
- Ghost in the Shell
- Gravity Falls
- Harry Potter
- Kingdom Hearts
- Mass Effect: Andromeda
- Rick and Morty
And a few surprises.
It's astounding how much product this company has coming out, and you have to admire its success.
Now lets just hope we don't all grow broke trying to collect all of these products through out 2017.
