Nicklas Nygren has been pretty big on the indie scene over the years thanks in large to the Knytt games. Knytt and its sequel, Knytt Stories, are both 2D platformers that focus on exploration and uncovering the secrets of other planets. While not revolutionizing the genre in any way, the simplistic 8-bit graphics and atmospheric music have earned Nygren his mark on the indie market, and now, the big time market as well.

Knytt Underground, the third game in the series, is being developed for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita by Nygren's Nifflas Games partnered with Greehill and Ripstone Publishing. Nygren is excited about the idea of expanding his universe, saying:

"Knytt Underground is the biggest game I've ever developed and is the first game where I feel that I have a story to tell. It's about the big questions; trying to understand life and our place in it –and failing completely."

A Windows, Mac, and Linux version will also be available, but no information is yet known. Knytt, Knytt Stories, and Nygren's other independant games can be downloaded at his website. Be sure to check out Within a Deep Forest, his other freeware game, as well.
