Flipboard on Wednesday announced that it has acquired Zite, a news reading application available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone, from CNN. The news network isn't being kicked out of the partnership entirely, however, because Flipboard said it's now going to launch exclusive new curated magazines from some of the biggest names on CNN.
Flipboard users will now be able to find CNN videos, photos and news stories in various sections of the application. In addition, CNN will provide custom magazines for the application created by Fareed Zakaria, Jake Tapper and John King. "Additional magazines from CNN shows and personalities will launch in the coming months," Flipboard said in a blog post Wednesday.
CNN, meanwhile, sees the partnership as a new way to get its content in front of more eyeballs than ever – and Flipboard, unlike CNN's own application, allows users to curate their own news with seemingly endless topics to choose from. "By tapping [Flipboard's] expertise, we will create new revenue opportunities and expand CNN's already massive mobile audience," CNN's senior vice president and general manager of Digital, KC Estenson said.
Terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed, though Business Insider says it was worth as much as $60 million for CNN.
