The Flash might be the fastest man alive, but development of his movie has been moving along at a snail’s pace. Instead of running, it’s been stumbling through one director after another, and set for a long time without a director attached. Now Variety is reporting that Flashpoint will soon have not one director, but two. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are in negotiations to direct the scarlet speedster’s standalone silver-screen showing.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. had considered Ben Affleck for a time, but he passed on the gig. We’re guessing his apparently limited time in the DCEU has something to do with that. With Daley and Goldstein helming the movie, it seems like the studio is going to take the movie in a comedic direction, which should play to both the Flash and star Ezra Miller’s strengths. The pair directed the 2015 reboot of Vacation, and we’ll be able to see their newest project when Game Night hits theaters next month. Along with their comedy credits, the duo also worked on the Spider-Man: Homecoming script enough to put their names atop the list on the movie’s IMDb page, so they’re no strangers to superhero movies either. And if Marvel has any character that would be a good tonal fit for the Flash, Spider-Man’s way up there with his nerdy bent and reliance on quips.
Flashpoint has lost, since its inception, Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie), writer Seth Graeme-Smith, and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) over various creative differences. Since then, names like Robert Zemeckis and Sam Raimi have mentioned in the same breath as Flashpoint, though it seems none of those conversations went anywhere.
Ezra Miller is getting ready to film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, so Daley and Goldstein have a little while before they get to work on the movie – if more “creative differences” don’t sent them packing, too. In the meantime, the team is apparently working on scripts for the extremely good 1980s cartoons M.A.S.K. Mobile Armed Strike Kommand and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, a show about guys with heat-activated stickers on their chests.
Flashpoint will hit theaters sometime in the future. Maybe we can have the Flash run forward in time and tell us when his movie is going to come out.
