Apple’s iPhone 8, which is now available worldwide, features a beautiful all-glass design that allows the device to support wireless charging. Unfortunately, the back glass panel isn’t particularly cheap to replace, even if you buy AppleCare+.
As confirmed by AppleInsider, if users crack the back of their iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, Apple will charge a $99 “other damage” fee to fix it. The company typically charges just $29 to a replace a device’s cracked display under AppleCare+.
According to early teardowns of Apple’s newest flagship, the higher cost may come down to labor. Unlike the front panel, the rear glass panel apparently features an ample amount of glue, making it very difficult to detach from the phone; taking apart the front panel is allegedly a much more straightforward process.
So, in the long run, the iPhone 8 could potentially be a much more expensive device to own compared to an iPhone 7, something that will likely be true for the iPhone X as well, as the device also features a rear glass panel to accommodate wireless charging.
AppleCare+ only covers two incidents of accidental damage, so anything after that and the cost to fix or replace your device goes up significantly: $349 for the iPhone 8 and $399 for the iPhone 8 Plus.
Factor in the fact that AppleCare+ costs $129 for the iPhone 8 and $149 for the iPhone 8 Plus, and the cost of ownership could potentially be a lot higher than what the devices retail for. Now might be a good time to invest in a screen protector and a case.
