Godzilla came out four years ago and if you began to forget about the revamped monster, we wouldn’t blame you. The movie served to jumpstart the so-called MonsterVerse, with the follow-up being Kong: Skull Island last year. Next year will bring the third chapter in the universe, Godzilla: King of Monsters, and the first photos of the movie were just released.

The first look at Godzilla: King of Monsters comes by way of Entertainment Weekly. Following up on the events from the first movie, humans are trying to come to grips with the idea that they live in a planted shared with some pretty terrifying creatures, including Godzilla, who just might be the scariest of them all. The exclusive first picture of him certainly establishes this fact.

In it, Godzilla is ferociously unleashing his atomic breathe into the sky, creating an ultra creepy scene that looks frightening and badass at the same time.

Director Michael Dougherty opened up in an interview with EW about Godzilla and how the world is trying to cope with his existence.

“The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting,” said Dougherty. Godzilla hasn’t been seen since the events of the first movie, “but there’s a paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”

As teased in Kong: Skull Island, there are other creatures out there, including King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan—who will play a big role in Godzilla: King of Monsters.

“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him,” said Dougherty. “In many ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.”

Aside from the new monster characters, there’s also new human characters in the new movie being played by Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown. A second photo of the movie gives us our first look at Farmiga and Brown’s characters.

Godzilla: King of Monsters is due out May 31, 2019 and will be a precursor to 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which will pit the two titular characters of the MonsterVerse against each other.
