It seems like we’ve been waiting forever for Capcom to deliver something solid for its controversial mobile RPG, Breath of Fire VI, but now we finally have some gameplay footage to make an informed choice on being skeptical or not.

In the trailer, we see a customized avatar turn into a dragon much like how the series’ traditional protagonist Ryu does in the classic games. Ryu this time around is the older brother of the customizable hero, so it would make sense that they share the same dragon blood and transformation abilities.

And then there is the combat, which looks like pretty typical mobile RPG fare. Plenty of numbers crowd the screen as colorful sprites spam magic spells, blasting enemies into mathematical oblivion. There could be a bit of smarts to the combat when it comes to timing and coordinating moves, but so far, Breath of Fire VI looks like it was specifically made for the mobile market, leaving its older fanbase behind.

How many games look like this? I can’t count them all. Breath of Fire VI benefits from having a big time publisher and probably a higher budget, not to mention development phase. Capcom retooled the art to make it somewhat resemble the classic games, using a new age anime style as a happy middle ground, and it might have the namesake, but I’m not seeing it live up to the series’ legacy just yet.

For those who don’t know, Breath of Fire is a classic JRG franchise from Capcom with games that span the Super Nintendo, PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance. They aren’t spectacular like Final Fantasy, but they have charming anthropomorphic worlds and solid RPG mechanics that fans can’t get enough of. The jump to mobile has been hard for some fans.

Breath of Fire VI will launch for Android and iOS in Japan this year, so I’ll be sure to try it out. I’ll do my best to approach it with an open mind.
