Uh oh, looks like someone flipped the switch a little early over at the Square Enix Boutique. The company’s French online shop had listed a version of Final Fantasy X|X2 HD Remaster for the PlayStation 4, but it has since been removed.
Luckily, the Internet never forgets and Google Cache doesn’t either. The site can still be accessed through that backdoor, or we can just be glad that the sources at Gematsu were able to snag a few screenshots before it went down. The page seems to indicate Square Enix is looking for a Spring 2015 release, putting it on shelves roughly at the same time as Final Fantasy Type-0 HD.
I already own the Final Fantasy X|X2 HD Remaster for the PlayStation 3, which I think will be around for many years to come because of its relatively friendly environment for retro-gaming. This means I won’t be picking up a copy of this new version, but it’s not so hard to see why this is being done. Final Fantasy X is a wonderful and massively popular game in both the United States and Japan. Square Enix just wants to make all it can from that popularity.
And who knows? I might even pick it up for the Vita someday, but not the PlayStation 4.
Square Enix does a better job at capitalizing on, I mean, preserving its history for modern audiences than most of its peers, and I’m glad that it is still showing a little love towards its PlayStation 2 era classics. How about some similar love for Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest VIII? That would be nice.
