Feeling down about the horrendous Steam version of Final Fantasy VI? Nintendo might just be your knight in shining armor in the coming weeks. Over in Japan, it has collaborated with Square Enix to bring the far superior Game Boy Advance port of Final Fantasy VI to the Wii U Virtual Console.
And while nothing has been confirmed for the West yet, we can dream, can't we?
When it comes to Final Fantasy VI, fans have surprisingly few options to properly enjoy the game. The PlayStation Network version is the most accessible and cheapest of the lot, and it can be played on a Vita, but as someone who has played every version, I can't get over the staggering loading times. Before and after every fight, before and after every time you open the menu screen, it's just two or three seconds of blank screen, but those seconds really start to pile up once you realize how often they occur. Some can overlook this, especially in this day and age when Just Cause 3 can take up to three minutes to load, but I just can't.
As for the Game Boy Advance version, it's far too expensive clocking in at over $100 on Amazon since it only got a limited release. For the sake of putting it on the Game Boy Advance, the soundtrack also takes a hit, and Square Enix's attempt at a bonus dungeon is lame. Still, this GBA port is a far more loyal and genuine alternative to the Super Nintendo original than the Steam version. If this is all Square Enix gives us on the Wii U, I'd say take it.
But there really is no substitute for the original, whether you play it on the Super Nintendo or access it through the cumbersome Wii Menu on the Wii U. Some will lament the older translation, but I would much rather get fun lines like "I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE YOU!" instead of lazily translated bits like "You B*^#%!" This is the version that made Final Fantasy VI a classic masterpiece, and if at all possible, it should be the one you play to get the most authentic experience.
Still, as I said before, I won't turn down the Game Boy Advance port. It's not as definitive as Final Fantasy IV or Final Fantasy V's Game Boy Advance versions, but it gets the job done and does so with a lot more grace than the Steam version.
Please, Nintendo! We need liberation! Won't you please be our Terra?
