Final Fantasy Type-o, the missing link on the PSP that was never localized, has been confirmed for an American release by Square Enix. The only difference with the original Japanese release is that it will be a full blown HD remake available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
"The voice of our Western fans was instrumental in the development of Final Fantasy Type-0, and we're very excited to release this title soon," says Director Hajime Tabata.
"The new PlayStation 4 system and Xbox One gaming and entertainment platform have really helped to re-envision this dynamic and turbulent world of Orience."
So Square Enix pulled through and delivered a JRPG at E3 after all, just not the one I wanted. That's fine, though. I'm still pumped because I've been wanting to play this game in English for a long time anyway. A cross buy option on the PS Vita would be nice because this game was built as a portable game, but I think we should just feel lucky that we are even seeing it at all.
The few Americans who have played it believe that Final Fantasy Type-0 rivals its parent game, Final Fantasy XIII, in a few places. It could just be the fact that its a lost gem putting ideas in people's heads, but seeing that Final Fantasy XIII isn't the most loved game in the series, it's not hard to believe either.
All of the hype makes me wonder though if fans of Final Fantasy Type-0 just see it through rose colored glasses simply because this game was only available as an import. Now that the unique appeal of it being a hidden treasure has been shattered, will those who have played it and sworn by it still love it?
We'll find out soon enough. No release date has been announced, but Final Fantasy Type-0 will be getting a long overdue release in America on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the coming year.
