After an hours-long teaser stream on YouTube depicting a cave wall and an accidental tweet from IGN Turkey of all places, Ubisoft has finally unveiled its next Far Cry game officially: Far Cry Primal.

Primal is set to release early next year and takes place during the Stone Age, “a time of extreme danger and limitless adventure, when giant mammoths and saber-toothed tigers roamed the earth, and humanity was at the bottom of the food chain.

This looks to be a pretty big departure for the series and a welcome one at that. You play as Takkar, the last survivor of your hunter tribe. According to Ubisoft’s description, growing your tribe is one of your main goals. Instead of being a lone invader (though it looks to start that way) it sounds like growing a community will be part of the focus. The trailer shows some group hunting. While that isn’t explicitly shown to be part of the gameplay, it would be a neat addition.

Far Cry games of the recent past have put the player in the position of a lone rebel hero saving the land from military invaders. Hunting seemed like a secondary aspect and felt a bit like poaching. Yeah, it’s a video game, but it felt kind of gross at times. This change in context gives the team the opportunity to make hunting a real and necessary part of the story and character. You’re not a regular guy who suddenly starts picking up weapons and murdering the top end of the endangered species list, you’re a hunter surviving in a world where you’re constantly in danger.

It’s hard to tell right now if this is a full sized Far Cry title. It’ll have barely been a year and a half since the last one, Far Cry 4, by the time Primal releases, and it’s hard to imagine Ubisoft banking on a game with a pretty limited supply of weapons and characters not speaking English. But then, it is a boxed game according to the official site, so it should be substantial.

Far Cry 4 was fabulously crafted, but ultimately suffered from being too similar to its predecessor. I’m hoping Far Cry Primal can signal a break from that path to offer us something refreshing and different.

Far Cry Primal is set to release Feb. 23, 2016.
