I've been a big fan of Star Wars' Disney revival over the past few years. Most, but not all, of the films have turned out far better than I had expected when viewed through the lens of modern day film making.
However, one thing I miss and, indeed, never got to experience myself is Star Wars long before it became the film empire that it is today. In 1977, Star Wars was just a movie… no sequels, no spin-offs, no expanded universe, comics, video games, or novels. Capturing that pure essence is becoming increasingly difficult over time now that Star Wars comes bundled with four decades of baggage, unable to escape out from under its lore, its expanded universe, its sequels, multiple trilogies, and the tectonic shift in the entertainment industry has undergone since the 1970s.
Fan-works also struggle to pay homage to those three brilliant years in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. The people making these tributes grew up in a world where Star Wars is the mega-entertainment franchise that it is today, and likewise, struggle to break free and recapture a Star Wars nostalgia that they never had.
But there's something different about this Star Wars: Animotion making the rounds right now.
Sure the proper 1980s anime style helps solidify the era in which Star Wars was created, since this is what anime looked and sounded like in the late 70s and early 80s, but the lack in mention of anything beyond the realm of A New Hope puts me in that innocent mood like I'm watching Star Wars for the very first time.
In fact, the grip and tone of this trailer is so pitch perfect that not even a shot of Jabba the Hutt from the Star Wars Special Edition derails my experience.
I can't decide which I like more: Chewbacca's moustache or muscle man Obi Wan Kenobi.
Sadly, this will never leave trailer form, but I'm sure it's best viewed as little more than a trailer anyway. Some things are best left abridged, short, and simple, a lesson Disney is now practicing by scaling back its Star Wars projects and producing the franchise at a far slower pace.
