Has Metal Gear become the new Mega Man? Now that the legendary series has been reduced to Pachinko fodder, a fate that Mega Man has at least graciously dodged, the massive fanbase has stepped up make games in the absence of its normal developers.

The first major attempt since the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain comes to us from a fan named Boker, who is setting out to remake the original 1987 Metal Gear using Unreal Engine 4. So far, he has released screenshots of the original infiltration area, since the Japanese MSX version doesn’t include the jungle like the NES version, and a brief teaser of his vision.

Keep in mind, the teaser is from before the change to Unreal Engine 4.

The name of the project is Outer Heaven, creating a bit of confusion. Last year, Konami shut down another fan-remake of the original Metal Gear with the same title. That Outer Heaven claimed to have support from Snake’s voice actor, use of the Source engine, and even official backing from Konami as long as it wasn’t used for profit.

I can’t quite tell if this new Outer Heaven is an original project or an ambitious member of the older team trying to get it off the ground again. It seems to be an all around new project from here.
