One of my least favorite parts of Deus Ex: Human Revolution was having to kill all the bosses. My favorite part of Fallout: New Vegas, on the other hand, was talking my way out of the final boss fight. Unique approaches to situations are what make games like Fallout so interesting. Dialogue choices, skill trees, and even your inventory can all play a role in how situations are handled. But too often, the answer lies down the barrel of a gun (or a cannon, or a flamethrower).

With Fallout 4, though, Bethesda Softworks intends to offer some more options.

According to director Todd Howard, via an interview with The Guardian, you “can avoid [killing] a lot” in the game.

“I can’t tell you that you can play the whole game without violence – that’s not necessarily a goal of ours – but we want to support different play styles as much as we can,” he said.

I’ll still probably pick the Bloody Mess perk. I always do. But I won’t miss a chance to go around the violence and experience some interesting dialogue.

We’ll be able to see just what kind of support Howard is talking about when Fallout 4 hits shelves on November 10 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
