Protogeo Oy, a company based in Helsinki, Finland that produces a mobile application called "Moves," announced on Thursday that it has officially been acquired by Facebook and will be joining the social network's team. It's a move that suggests Facebook has some interest in the hot mobile fitness and health market, and it's just the latest in a series of acquisitions made by the firm.
Moves is an app that's available for Android and iOS that keeps track of your movement throughout the day, including steps, but it can also show you a timeline of what you did throughout the day, routes you took, and more. It's also capable of tracking runs or bike rides, and can be configured with user-set goals.
"Now, we're joining Facebook's talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people," Protogeo Oy said on its website Thursday. "For those of you that use the Moves app — the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook."
Neither Facebook nor Moves discussed what may change in the future, but presumably there will be even more social aspects added. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by either party.
