Facebook Messenger on iPad

It took Facebook what seemed like an eternity to make its official iOS application iPad-compatible. But Zuckerberg and co. are already working on porting another app, Facebook Messenger, to Apple’s tablet, as well as introducing video chat that will be powered by Skype.

A source for 9to5Mac has provided an early beta of the iPad application, which offers much the same functionality of the iPhone version, including one-to-one messaging, group chat, the ability to locate your friends on a map and more.

While the source could not provide a release date for the app, they claim it is being “actively developed with new builds being readied often.” But before the application arrives on your iPad, you can expect to see an update for the iPhone that will introduce video calling powered by Skype:

Facebook is also working on an updated version of the iPhone app with Skype video chat support and improved performance. The new iPhone app will likely come before an updated Facebook Messenger for Android with similarly new functionality.

According to the report, this update is already being tested on Facebook’s internal servers, and it’s on track for a launch this summer.

Although the full Facebook app allows you to access your inbox and message friends, the idea behind Facebook Messenger is to provide a clean and simple user interface that provides instant access to you messages only. This negates the need to use the often buggy Facebook app for simple messaging, and prevents you from being sidetracked by pictures of your nan’s new kitten and Autodance videos from your friends.

Are you looking forward to Facebook Messenger for iPad?
