While all eyes are on Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness at the moment, I am worried that this other little tri-Ace gem will sadly go unnoticed. Would you believe I had more fun with it than its big Star Ocean brother?

Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky takes a lot of cues from tri-Ace’s undisputed masterpiece, Valkyrie Profile. Each of the four characters in battle are assigned a button, and combat revolves around chaining their attacks together to make devastating combos against one or all enemies at a time.

The spear wielder swipes in large arcs, so she can hit multiple enemies with one slash. The gunslinger jumps and fires with crazy acrobatic moves, allowing him to get multiple hits in his chain. The sword swinger damages single enemies heavily. Finally, our magic user blasts area attacks. Each character has a use in combat, and the fighting is deceptively simple.

Like most tri-Ace games, this will require some digging to find the finer points. Of course, being thrown into the middle of a campaign that’s not in your native language is not a way to truly understand a game’s mechanics. I’m hoping this comes to the States, and I can learn to progress along with the storyline with the creators’ intentions in mind. Then I will feel more competent with this interesting title.

And to back up this intense action are the cutest character models you’ll ever see. It’s like watching a Pixar anime directed by John Woo. Hilarious! I want more! Here’s to hoping that Atlas, Aksys, or XSEED steps up to localize this one.

Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. I’m leaning towards the Vita version, but I had no problem with the console either. This feels like a true PlayStation RPG that can be enjoyed no matter the conditions or the place.

Don’t overlook this one. It could be my surprise Game of Show.
