If you are like me and you play Etrian Odyssey just to go wild with the ingenious RPG mechanics, then Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl still has an option for you.

Al the beginning of a new journey, a choice is offered for those wishing to play "story mode" or "classic mode." Classic Mode allows for just what its name implies, a straight up RPG experience. Build your own team, write your own stories, and take on the world as you see fit.

The original Etrian Odyssey might be a little dated these days with the later games in the series taking its ideas to many extremes. However, for the most barebones iteration of the game's ideas, you won't find a better and more available option. It might even be cheaper than the DS original.

I'm still partial to all the ideas Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan brings to the table and don't feel like this simpler package is for me just yet. Still, those looking to climb aboard to this fantastic series now have a better jumping off point with this remake of the first game. It can be tackled in many possible ways, with as little or as much story as you see fit. In the end, you can't go wrong with either.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Mellennium Girl will be available for the Nintendo 3DS on Oct. 1.
