There wasn't much doubt Essential's upcoming bezel-less smartphone would run Android, but we have confirmation anyway.

As Samsung was taking the wraps off its new Galaxy S8 on Wednesday, Alphabet's Eric Schmidt Tweeted about the "phenomenal new choices for Android" on the horizon. Now, Schmidt didn't call out the LG G6 or even the Galaxy S8 Plus. Instead, he points to Andy Rubin's Tweet from earlier this week that teased the first smartphone from his new company.

Andy Rubin is one of the fathers of Android, so it makes sense his phone would run the mobile OS. Now, the question remains: Will it feature a custom launcher and additional software tweaks?

It's going to have to, because a bezel-less screen may not be a key differentiator for long, especially with the LG G6 and S8 in the mix. When all devices look and perform the same, software will play a key factor.

Another high-end Android device

While no official details about Essential's smartphone have been revealed, an earlier report claimed it would feature cutting-edge specs and "the ability to gain new features over time." We're not really sure what the means, but we're certainly intrigued.

With Schmidt openly promoting Essential's device, hopefully it means we'll learn more information soon.
