Duke Nukem Forever, the long awaited game, has finally received a release date of May 3rd, 2011.

Yes, the trailer is crass, but if you know anything about the Duke Nukem series, what did you expect?  Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for over a decade now, and I think we can take a bit of his crass humor if it means we are truly going to finally walk in a store and see the title sitting on the shelves.

"The moment fans all over the world have been waiting for is almost here," declared Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "May 3, 2011 marks Duke's return as he unleashes his brash and brutally honest wit on the world. His return is going to be epic and one that will make video gaming history!"

When we saw some actual gameplay footage of Duke Nukem Forever back in Sept., and then we heard of a probable 2011 release date, I still couldn't get too excited about this game because we've had more than enough false starts to make anyone skeptical.  Heck, I'm still going to be a bit suspicious of this really happening until I see it sitting on a shelf in a store.

I still wonder, "is Duke Nukem still relevant?"  This game was announced in 1997, and in gaming time that might as well be a hundred years.  Yes, there is still some shock value to what he says as you just don't see that very often in games, but the world of gaming has had so many first person shooters (FPS) now, is a dirty lexicon enough to draw in gamers?  What I'm seeing in the above trailer graphics wise isn't really blowing my socks off, and the gameplay looks … well … like any generic FPS.  I'm going to have to get some actual demo time with this game before I plunk down any money on it.

May 3rd is the release date for the United States, and internationally you'll be able to pick one up starting on May 6th.  The game will be available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

What say you?  Are you still harboring any excitement for Duke Nukem Forver?
