Earlier this year, Canonical released a version of Ubuntu Touch OS that you could run on the Nexus 4 or Galaxy Nexus. It originally came with the warning that it couldn’t replace the full feature set offered by Android and might even brick your device. Now, a dual-booting Android Ubuntu OS is available to download from the company, and it lets you easily jump back and forth between the two platforms.
The latest version of Ubuntu OS should work on all but the latest stock Android devices, including the original Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Nexus 4 and the Galaxy Nexus. To start running Ubuntu you’ll need to have the software running on a home computer, though we don’t recommend trying this out if you’re not comfortable flashing ROMs and tinkering with your device already.
If you’re desperate to give Ubuntu Touch a shot and you have an old Nexus device sitting around, this is your chance to get your hands dirty. However, if you’re not prepared to install the new software yourself there’s no need to rush. Canonical recently secured a deal to get Ubuntu pre-installed on at least one upcoming high-end smartphone, though the company wouldn’t say when in 2014 the device may launch.
