Motorola’s Moto X Play may not get an official launch in the U.S., but a version of the device is still expected to arrive in the United States as the DROID MAXX 2. Last week we learned the new phone could be a Verizon exclusive, and now we’re getting a first look at the modified handset.

Based on these images the DROID MAXX 2 actually looks pretty similar to the Moto X Play. Verizon’s branding is pretty minimal. Just a small logo embossed near the bottom of the back panel along with the word “DROID.” It’s possible there could also be a specialized red version for the carrier, but we’ll apparently get a few other colorful options as well.

Assuming it’s a straight copy of the Moto X Play, the DROID MAXX should pack a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a hefty 3630mAh battery, a 21-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter, a Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of expandable storage and a water-resistant design. Motorola’s phone is also available through Moto Maker, though it’s unclear if Verizon will offer the same option.

We’re still not sure when the DROID MAXX 2 will actually arrive, though hopefully Verizon won’t make us wait to long. The carrier is also expected to reveal a new DROID Turbo with an allegedly “unbreakable” display, which should make for a pretty exciting new lineup.
