Square Enix threw a huge party last night for the release date announcement of Dragon Quest XI, and we emerged on the other side with a definitive timetable. Both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 versions of Dragon Quest XI will be released in Japan on July 29.

As predicted, we did not get a release date for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which was confirmed for development well after the initial two, and we definitely didn’t get an English announcement either, because… hey… Dragon Quest!

31 years and counting

Although Dragon Quest isn’t nearly as recognized or prestigious in North America, the series holds the same weight as any of the other longtime heavy hitters in the Japanese video game industry. This is a landmark release for Japan, and if it catches on, it has the potential to join the rest of the entries as an all-time great.

I’m not sure how gamers and the public at large will respond, though. Console gaming isn’t quite the beast it used to be in Japan, and it’s possible that most fans will be waiting for the Nintendo Switch version, which might hold back sales figures for the PS4. All I know is that The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Dragon Quest all coming out in Japan in the same year is enormous, and this line-up is sure to give the home console business a much-needed boost.

Dragon Quest XI will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS on July 29.
