Dragon Quest V

Yup, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. This is Hyrule Warriors all over again as more and more familiar Dragon Quest faces join the ranks of the musou action game Dragon Quest: Heroes. Earlier we saw the announcement of Dragon Quest VIII‘s Yangus and Jessica, and two more beloved characters join them today as confirmed by Jump magazine: the “Heavenly Brides” of Dragon Quest V.

For those who haven’t played it, Dragon Quest V revolves around the entire life of a single man from childhood to old age. Along the way, he has to make a choice between two women to become his wife and determine what color hair his children will have. He can go with his adventurous childhood blondie friend, Bianca, or the rich and polite blue haired Nera.

The story pushes you towards Bianca so your blonde haired son can look like Super Saiyan Gohan, but the choice is totally up to you.

Both Bianca and Nera will be playable characters in Dragon Quest: Heroes, so you will still have to choose between which one you want to take into battle. Bianca’s mix of tough melee attacks and offensive magic make her a better choice to take headlong into battle, and Nera’s healing magic makes her more suitable for the back line.

The two women are the seventh and eighth playable characters from the main series to be confirmed for an appearance on top of the four original characters. Deborah, the third bride added to Dragon Quest V‘s Nintendo DS remake, might have been a little too scary to see in full 3D.

Surprisingly enough, all eight confirmed characters have been supporting characters, and none of Dragon Quest‘s iconic silent protagonists have been slated to appear yet.

Granted, this isn’t exactly Super Smash Bros. in terms of familiarity, but who would you like to see pop up in the roster? Dragon Quest IV has the best overall cast of characters in terms of size and personality, and the tubby merchant Torneko simply as to make the list. I’ve also always liked both the male and female green haired protagonists from Dragon Quest IV.

Dragon Quest: Heroes will be released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in early 2015. No confirmation yet for a Western release.
