Just one more week to go before one of Japan’s most beloved games of all time gets a re-release on the Nintendo 3DS. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is set to launch on Aug. 27 in Japan, and Square Enix continues to push it right up until the very edge.

Two new elements creep their way into this new batch of screenshots that weren’t in the PlayStation 2 version of the game. The first several show off a new dungeon, some ancient ruins, that our heroes will be able to conquer at the higher levels.

And then there are the new cutscenes not seen in the first version. No white panther has ever existed in the game up until this point, a mutation of the popular feline sidekick from Dragon Quest V. The final two screenshots also possibly spoil the alternate ending if you speak Japanese. Our protagonist comes off as quite gloomy, so maybe it isn’t the happiest outcome in the world.

Looks like me when I think about this game possibly never getting an English release.

All in all, I am very eager to see how this does in Japan. In a generation dominated by Yo-Kai Watch and Monster Hunter, it’s interesting to see how the old guard holds up, and no series out there is better equipped to teach the youngin’s how to do it than Dragon Quest.

And after that, I am very eager to see it make it to the States in an English version. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on Aug. 27.
