Dragon Quest V

Square Enix continues to bring its longest running series to the mobile market with confirmation that Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is on the way. Most likely, we will be seeing a port of the Nintendo DS remake with a remapped interface for a smartphone's touch controls.

Dragon Quest V is a fan-favorite in the series because of its touching story which follows the life of man as he escapes from slavery on a quest to, you guessed it, save the world. What makes this journey so emotional, though, is how he must choose a wife from three options and raise his own little pair rugrats, who end up battling alongside him! It's a story about family at its heart.

Oh yeah, it also features a Pokemon-esque monster collecting system. It's a bit more random and obtuse than Nintendo's series or even the Dragon Quest Monster games, but if you need your monster catching fix on a smartphone, this might be the place to satisfy it.

I'm not totally on-board with these Dragon Quest ports for iOS and Android as a lot of them lose something in the transition. Dragon Quest VIII suffers from claustrophobic cameras, terrible frame rate issues, and a lack of voice acting. Dragon Quest I and II feature horribly remixed graphics and a boring UI.

However, one I can throw my back behind is Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. This port of the DS version looks just like its source material, and thanks to the graphics being pretty simplistic, it doesn't require any sacrifices on their part to run properly. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride should receive similar treatment.

No release date yet, and we are still waiting for Dragon Quest III to get its port. Maybe we'll see it before the end of the year, but seeing how it is not even out in Japan yet, expect it to come in 2015.
