We’ve seen screenshots and a TV spot showing how Arc System Works plans to implement over 100 characters into Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Budoten, but now we finally have our first trailer with full details.

As we know by this point, a large bulk of the characters will be used as support to power-up the main fighter or lend a hand with their own punishing blow. The 20 playable characters extend to the obvious choices like Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Gotenks, and Buu. Thankfully, Krillin makes the cut, but the rest of the older characters aren’t anywhere to be found.

  • Goku (Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God)
  • Teen Gohan (Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2)
  • Ultimate Gohan (Base, Super Saiyan)
  • Vegeta (Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 4)
  • Future Trunks (Base, Super Saiyan)
  • Gotenks (Super Saiyan)
  • Gogeta (Super Saiyan)
  • Krillin
  • Piccolo
  • Raditz
  • Nappa
  • Ginyu
  • Frieza (First Form, 2nd Form, Final Form, Golden Form)
  • Android 18
  • Cell (Perfect)
  • Majin Buu
  • Super Buu
  • Kid Buu
  • Beerus
  • Bardock (Base, Super Saiyan)
  • Syn/Omega Shenron
  • Broly (Legendary Super Saiyan)

We certainly have plenty of Saiyans and Super Saiyans to choose from, showing the diversity we’ve come to expect from a Dragon Ball Z game. Raditz? Seriously? No Tien or Yamcha, even? We get Raditz.

Man, I’d love to see a fighting game based solely on Dragon Ball rather than Dragon Ball Z. That would be sweet.

This is also the first we’ve seen of actual gameplay and graphics, and it looks solid enough. I am a fan of the usage of sprites, and I think they look wonderful. The animation itself isn’t quite as smooth as I would like, but it is a Nintendo 3DS game after all.

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Budoten will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan this summer. No word on a localization yet.
