BioWare has unveiled its box art for its upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Inquisition, and I'm liking it quite a bit. It's tacky enough to be put on a shelf and sold to the masses, but there is also enough style to appeal to those who care enough about this sort of thing. Only problem is that there isn't a physical dragon anywhere to be found on the cover!
Granted, that is a pretty short scope of thought, though. Our protagonist is reaching into the air, about to blast away a horde of "not dragon" demons, and emerging from his hand is a spell which takes the form of a dragon at least. Does this mean that BioWare is borrowing a bit from Skyrim and making our hero Dragonborn? Will he control the powers of the dragons in this game and use them against evil dragons? Sounds a little familiar.
What also stands out a lot is the unmissable shape the demons and the spells make when they collide, creating a giant snout ready to scoop up and chew our protagonist into tiny bits. There is your ultimate evil dragon, you just have to look past the illusion and find him, just like Waldo.
I'm very pumped for Dragon Age: Inquisition. So much so that I might be finally updating to a full blown gaming PC to play it, leaving my console gaming roots in the past. Or I might just buy it for the PlayStation 3 because it's a cross generational release.
That being said, my Japanese and handheld gaming habits are back in full swing these days, and all I dabble in from the West are indie games. However, there is no company out there, besides maybe Bethesda, that can get my blood boiling for a huge budget title anymore the way BioWare can. Maybe it's the indie roots or the incredible minds behind the games, but BioWare always has a consistent sense of style and character which carries over into each game.
I've always dug companies who can do that from release to release beyond the borders of franchises. When you're looking at a BioWare game, you know you are looking at a BioWare game. Simple enough.
It's hard to believe that Mass Effect 3 was released just two years ago. After what seems like an eternity, I can't wait to jump aboard another future BioWare classic. Just like the last generation, it might be the company which drags me kicking and screaming into the modern age of gaming.
Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC this fall.
