Yesterday we saw the box art revealed, and today we have a brand to trailer to keep Dragon Age: Inquisition on the forefront of our minds. Alongside it, EA and BioWare also have a release date solidified for October 7th.
Dragon Age: Inquisition casts its protagonist as the sole survivor of an explosion which killed thousands of soldiers, and only his gifts of green magic allowed him to be spared. He seems to hold a connection to the dragons in the game, recalling themes used in recent fantasy franchises like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Game of Thrones, and Dragon's Dogma. He uses his powers to destroy a plagued race of beings, and will eventually have to cross swords with the dragons themselves.
Compared to previous Dragon Age games, this game seems to have a lot more focus on action. Various styles of sword swings, a hookshot weapon, and diving and dodging techniques all imply that its turn-based gameplay is a thing of the past, and it too has taken up the mantle of action RPG. There really is no other way to say this, but BioWare has allowed Dark Souls' universal acclaim to influence Dragon Age.
I haven't played it yet, though. This is just conjecture from a two minute trailer, but if that is true, it remains to be seen how the fans will react to the radical change. I'm on the fence, and I would rather get my hands on it before casting judgement. The original Dragon Age: Origins was designed with the Baldur's Gate games in mind, and a game that plays like Dark Souls couldn't be any further from the whole purpose of the series.
Maybe only this style of combat is shown in the trailer because it is flashy, but Dragon Age: Inquisition is reported to sport both styles of combat throughout the game.
With Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare is primed to have the biggest RPG of the year now that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been pushed back into 2015. Only The Elder Scrolls Online stands in its way, and the first wave of reviews don't exactly spell out Game of the Year material. If BioWare can use the Frostbite 3 and still keep its consistent sense of character intact, I don't see what else can keep it off the top of the pile.
Without its longtime in-house engine, though, it doesn't exactly look like a BioWare game, which has me a little worried.
Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on October 7th.
