It’s hard for me to get a good read on DOOM.  I remember enjoying the trailer during Bethesda’s E3 2015 press conference… for about the first five minutes. Then I started to want it to end as I was ready to see the next game. Bethesda needed to fill an hour and a half presentation with about three or four games. Not exactly easy to do.

I’m sure that game is meant to be digested in brief bouts, much like the trailers. Here we have a much more palatable bit of footage that shows almost everything we need to see. Intense action, bloody kills, goals and power-ups, and super fast combat. People have called DOOM a fabulous blend of old and new, and that description is about as perfect as it gets.

Why do I say “almost,” though? What’s missing from the footage? Well, the BFG-9000 of course! Plenty of DOOM’s classic weapons get a decent amount of airtime, including the plasma rifle, shotgun, and rocket launcher, as well as a new SMG and rail-cannon rifle thing. Another exciting power-up belongs to the skeletal alien beasts which can summon fireballs from their hands and simultaneously fire rockets from their shoulder pads. Intense!

But no BFG-9000. id Software has to hold something back, I guess. Can we even use the BFG-9000 without picky players screaming that it is cheap or breaks the game?

DOOM is expected to launch in early 2016 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
