One of the primary tenants of Fallout 4 appears to be the freedom to choose. You’ll be able to choose how you play, how you explore, how you defend and how you build. Heck, you’ll even be able to choose if you do those things at all.
Take crafting, for instance. Games Radar spoke with Bethesda’s Pete Hines about whether or not crafting is 100% essential to beating Fallout 4. No. It’s not.
“It’s a completely optional, freeform thing that you can do, if that’s what you want to do…
…If you don’t care about that and you just want to play quests and play side quests, and finish the main quest and that sort of thing then you can just ignore all of this [crafting]. Or do as much or as little as you want. “
That’s fantastic. Crafting might be boring to some gamers. Forcing players to use it isn’t the way to go, and Bethesda’s electing to make it optional. Hines does explain, though, that they’ve tried to make it fun enough to actually drive you to use it.
“You can [play] it and never even notice that feature is there if you want to,but once you figure it out, it’s like, ‘okay, this is pretty cool. Now I want to do more.'”
These days, I can totally take or leave crafting in video games. If Bethesda manages to make it genuinely fun in Fallout 4, sign me up.
