DC movie’s woes have been well chronicled. Its version of a cinematic universe has come nowhere near Marvel’s implementation, and now it is trying to shift gears towards its next movie. That would be Aquaman. The movie will follow up the events of Justice League but will tell its own story expanding upon the origins of the lead character.

Interestingly, not much is known about the movie. It won’t arrive in theaters until December, but this is usually the time when at least a couple of teaser images or a short trailer drops, but it has been radio silence for Aquaman. Up until now, the reason for this was unknown. Now we know why. It’s all director James Wan’s fault.

The director recently opened up about why we haven’t seen so much as a first look image of the movie. The reason is quite simple: there’s a lot of VFX work that needs to be done.

“Hey friends, I usually do my best to avoid internet noises (especially fabricated distractions) but a teaser-trailer going out this weekend was never in the books — despite what some claim. It’s not because of anyone or any nefarious reason holding it back — IT’S ME,” the director opined. “I am simply not ready yet to share. This movie is filled to the gills with VFX, and the process is as slow and laborious as a sea-slug! Yes, even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as subpar.”

There you have it, the movie just isn’t ready now. This should come as no surprise. Wan is notoriously a perfectionist, and judging by his comments, it has been hard to perfect the underwater Aquaman scenes.

Unfortunately, there is still no timeframe for the Aquaman trailer will drop. But you can take solace in the fact that it’ll look great when it does. Aquaman arrives in theaters December 21.
