As the introduction of the 2018 iPhone nears, it’s natural to begin looking at what’s coming next year. Many have speculated Apple’s upcoming device might include an in-display fingerprint scanner, but that will not happen, according to Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo has a strong track record of keeping the pulse on all things Apple. His latest note claims it will not include support for an in-display fingerprint scanner, spelling the death of Touch ID for good.
Instead, Apple will move forward with the True Depth Camera system it uses for Face ID. The second generation of the system is expected to come with the 2018 iPhones with added refinements, including the option to add a second face model.
Next year should see an even better Face ID system. The current variant of the biometric system is very useful, however, it still has issues identifying faces with glasses on or when lying down. As it reaches its second and third generation, Apple should perfect its biometric system of choice as it did with Touch ID.
Even though Apple is ignoring the in-display fingerprint scanner, Android counterparts are already ready to jump in on the technology. The OnePlus 6T is reported to come with the system later this year following the footsteps set by Vivo’s Nex. It won’t be surprising to see most 2019 Android flagships come with the feature, despite Apple reportedly going another route.
