Dissidia Final Fantasy is kind of like the Super Smash Bros. of the Final Fantasy multiverse. Are we using that term now? The franchise’s most recognizable faces are being tossed onto the battlefield where they will duke it out to fuel the fires of fanboy supremacy.

Square Enix has confirmed that the game will star 14 characters when it launches, and seven have already been confirmed in a new trailer for the location test. This early version will be released to the public this week in Japan.

Did your favorite Hero of Light make the cut?

  • Warrior of Light (Final Fantasy I)
  • Onion Knight (Final Fantasy III)
  • Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI)
  • Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
  • Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)
  • Y’Shtola (Final Fantasy XIV)
  • Ramza Beoulve (Final Fantasy Tactics)

I’m beyond psyched that Ramza is finally getting a little love on the grand Final Fantasy stage. He’s not a protagonist of a main line Final Fantasy game, but that doesn’t stop him from being among the upper tier of Final Fantasy heroes. That’s just the storytelling majesty of Final Fantasy Tactics. I’m also pleased that Terra Bradford has made the cut. Final Fantasy VI is a fan-favorite, so it’s only natural that she be there.

While not necessarily my choices for who I’d like to see, it’s a bit shocking that we are missing a representative from Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy X. Square Enix often parades these two games as among the biggest in the franchise, but neither of their protagonists, Cecil and Titus, have made the initial cut. Maybe Team Ninja just hasn’t gotten around to rendering them yet.

Zidane and Squall are also mysteriously absent so far.

As as for my choices? Who would I like to see in Dissidia Final Fantasy? The leading characters are often not the best characters, meaning that each has a supporting cast that deserves some love. I’d like to see Sabin from Final Fantasy VI make the jump, and the same goes to Auron from Final Fantasy X. I have a feeling that Kain will be a supporting choice for Final Fantasy IV after Cecil is confirmed, but Yang has always been my favorite character from that game.

Can’t go wrong with Yuffie or Red XIII either from Final Fantasy VII, and if we are going to break universal boundaries, why not just add Crono and Frog from Chrono Trigger? Who would you like to see in Dissidia Final Fantasy for the arcade?

The game will release in Japan this week for a location test, and the final build should be out before the end of the summer.
