Disgaea 5 (10)

So far, NipponIchi has done a marvelous job making sure that its Disgaea series have all gotten handheld ports. Disgaea and Disgaea 2 popped up on the PSP, and likewise Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 4 woundup on the Vita shortly after their big release. Logic suggests that Disgaea 5 would eventually follow suit, right?

Well, not so much. After all, despite mostly being made from good old-fashioned hand-drawn sprites, Disgaea 5 is still a PlayStation 4 game, and the specs on the PS Vita just aren’t there for a port. NipponIchi President Sohei Niikawa explains in an interview with PlayStation Dengeki.

I know that there are many consumers who would like this. However, we are developing the game with PlayStation 4 specs, so to be honest, it’s impossible to port the game to the PlayStation Vita. Porting the game without erasing a lot of features and cutting down the amount of assets would be very difficult, and of course, we do not wish to do that. I think there are people waiting for a “Return” version with all of the contents [and DLC] included, but I’m sorry, that will not happen this time. (laughs) If we were to port the game to a portable system, fans would probably have to wait for the next portable system after the Vita, but I haven’t heard anything about this [system], so that would be far in the future. Disgaea 5 will have Remote Play. Do not wait for a PS Vita port, and please, play the PlayStation 4 version.

It could happen, but I think NipponIchi would have to make a lot of cuts and sacrifices that they aren’t willing to make. I guessed that a Vita port would be inbound, but this idea was still nagging in the back of my mind when I did. It’s a shame too because NipponIchi’s strategy series allows for nearly infinite replay, and it just feels more natural on the move because of its style and pick-up-and-play nature.

Oh well, I still l need to play Disgaea 3 and 4 before I start worrying about Disgaea 5. Maybe I’ll stick with those on my Vita instead. 4 seems to be much more popular with fans, so maybe that’s where I should jump back in.
