After hopes, dreams, theories, and finally leaks, it’s official: Diablo III is heading to Nintendo Switch. Blizzard confirmed this week that its hack’em-up dungeon crawler is joining the Switch library as Diablo III: Eternal Collection, a bundle containing all the add-ons and some Switch-exclusive loot for Nintendo fans. The six-year-old game will be priced at $59.99 for this new release.
Because the game is coming to Switch, flexibility of play is a pretty big deal. You can of course play solo at home, but you can also play with up to four players on a single Nintendo Switch console, or get four players linked up online or over a local connection. If you want to go sit in the middle of the woods and play Diablo together, the world is yours.
Furthering that flexibility is Blizzard’s decision to unlock everything from the start. That means that from the moment you boot up the game, you’ll have access to the campaign, adventure mode, all seven of the classes, and season play.
On the cartridge, you’ll find all the content from the original release, as well as the Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer add-ons. For all the Nintendo heads out there, you’ll be able to roll out in Ganondorf-themed cosmetic armor, Majora’s Mask-inspired wings, or be followed by a Cucco – the dangerous attack chickens from the Zelda games. There’s also a Triforce character portrait in case that wasn’t all enough.
This is a separate release from the other consoles and PC version, so don’t look for any cross-platform play or cross-platform saves at this time.
Blizzard hasn’t set a hard release date for Diablo III: Eternal Collection, but says it’s coming later this year. We’re already 60% of the way through the year, so that puts the developer in a pretty tight window. Start your thumb exercises now.
