Back in April, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided‘s executive game director Jean-Francois Dugas, when asked if his game would be “fully ghostable,” he said that it will – including bosses. While that is still true, there’s more to it than that. Gameplay director Patrick Fortier followed up on Dugas’ comments in an interview with Eurogamer.

There are two kinds of encounters – social boss fights and more “classical boss fights,” he explained.

There are verbal debates with NPCs, something we saw when we looked at the game at E3. Story Director Mary De Marle was a bit more careful with her words than Dugas, saying during that presentation that the entire game can be played non-lethally, and that’s a bit closer to what Fortier had to say.

“Through your social interactions leading up to a boss fight, you might have talked to people, or you might have explored, or you might have obtained certain elements or means to deal with a boss fight,” Fortier told Eurogamer.

The game can be played non-lethally, but not every boss is willing to talk and some social interactions are required. Players who choose to concentrate on stealth and hacking, though, won’t find themselves out of luck in a boss fight.

“They won’t get burnt this time!” Fortier said. While it’s not exactly the same as ghosting or talking our way through boss fights, I’m looking forward to playing the game knowing that however I play it, the game plans to support my choices with fun and hopefully challenging options.
