Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently deep in development, but it’s a ways out. Since we’re in the middle of the summer lull, now’s a good time to look back – way back. All the way to the year 2000.

In the year 2000, the original Deus Ex, from Ion Storm, was released to much critical acclaim. The game was linear, but each dot along the line provided tons of choices that would affect later parts of the story.

This week, three members of the original development team – Project Director Warren Spector, Writer Sheldon Pacotti, and Lead Programmer Chris Norden – got together to do a Let’s Play of the first section of the game.

We don’t often get the chance to see developers look so far back like this. The team points out some great Easter eggs – the 0451 door code wasn’t a Fahrenheit 451 reference, it was just the door code at their office. Spector, who is one of the pioneers in bringing meaningful choice and emergent play into games, says he’s amazed that people still care about the game.

It looks more than a little aged at this point, but it’s easy to see even in this video the core of games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and even the influence on something like The Witcher series.

If you want to peek back at history, the original Deus Ex is available for less than $10 on places like Steam and There are even HD texture packs out there created by fans of the game to update the affair a little.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will hit PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime in 2016.
