In the first trailer for Detective Pikachu, things take a weird turn. And what I mean by that is this movie exists at all.
The trailer introduces audiences to a fictional world in which Pokémon and humans live in harmony—and then there's Pikachu, a sarcastic Pokémon voiced by Ryan Reynolds. Yes, the same actor behind Deadpool.
As someone in my office said, this is basically Dr. Doolittle but with Pokémon, which is a fair comparison. For fans of the franchise, it's strange to see a live-action movie with their favorite characters. Yet, the Pokémon fit seamlessly in the world that has been created, making it believable and real.
Which is a huge accomplishment. Never did we think this movie would work, yet the trailer has us both thoroughly confused but also very excited. Watch the first trailer and see for yourself
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10, 2019.
