Imagine if the entire nation of New Zealand played the Destiny beta. All 4.5 million of those Kiwis fired up the platform of their choice and tried Bungies first new foray in gaming since Halo.

That’s how many people played the Destiny beta, plus 100,000 or so. Activision released the official figures this morning in a presser, and it turns out that exactly 4,638,937 unique players downloaded and tried the Destiny beta across the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. Those 4.6 million gamers signed up over an average span of less than a week.

We were part of that surge of players, making us special little snowflakes. Eric and I wrote a quick piece about our opinion of what we saw in the beta itself. That went up yesterday.

Honestly, it was quite a good showing. I’m not sure if all 4.6 million gamers liked what they saw in the beta, but I imagine Bungie and Activision enjoyed a tremendous amount of publicity and pre-orders.

Destiny will officially release on Sept. 9 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Will you be picking it up?
