Dead Rising 3 is more than just Capcom showing off the graphical capabilities of the new Xbox One hardware like the first one was for the Xbox 360. It will also feature deep integration with the new SmartGlass which will provide exclusive missions and characters not available otherwise.
Executive Producer Josh Bridge said in an interview with Siliconera that this would not be a standalone app, but part of the Xbox SmartGlass app which will recognize if Dead Rising 3 is being played.
“After you launch the app, it notices that Dead Rising is currently being played, press a button, and in kicks our phone. It actually skins your phone to be like the phone from the game’s universe.”
Within the game, the character’s phone will be used to get exclusive missions from a myterious voice on the other end of the line.
“You’ll get calls from a character that are only on the SmartGlass device. So if you don’t have SmartGlass, you won’t get those calls from that guy. Which also means you won’t get those missions.”
Bridge made it clear that that these missions will not be necessary to beat the game and no achievements will be held back from gamers who have no SmartGlass, either. App codes will be delivered through the app which will be used to unlock more missions.
“When you complete missions, he gets you more app codes, and those app codes can be spent on whatever you want, plus used whenever you want. Though they do have cool down periods.”
How about it? Does this new ecosystem make you interested in Dead Rising 3? Out initial reaction to the game was thinking that it was awfully brown and lacked the campy humor the series is widely known for. The fact that Capcom stated it was being geared towards the CoD crowd has also raised our eyebrows a bit.
Still, having your phone skinned in the Dead Rising universe sounds cool, and it is at least trying to show some use for SmartGlass.
Dead Rising 3 will be available exclusive for the Xbox One at launch.
