After Disney made the shocking decision to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn over offensive tweets, the ramifications of the decision are now being felt. Last week the entire cast penned their support for Gunn, but now actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, is going one step further by threatening to quit if the script Gunn wrote isn’t used.
In his first interview since James Gunn’s firing, Bautista didn’t hold back in throwing his support for the director while not mincing words in criticizing Disney for its decision. He went as far as threatening to quit the project.
“I spoke to Chris Pratt the day after it happened and he’s a bit religious so he wanted time to pray and figure it out, but I was more like: f*ck this,” says Bautista. “This is bullsh*t. James is one of the kindest, most decent people I’ve met.”
He continued, “Where I’m at right now is that if [Marvel doesn’t] use that script, then I’m going to ask them to release me from my contract, cut me, or recast me. I’d be doing James [Gunn] a disservice if I didn’t.”
While Bautista’s intent is clear, it may not end up meaning much. As he pointed out, he’s under contract and it all comes down to whether or not Disney lets him out. Disney may have no problem forcing Bautista to honor his contract, which he is required to do. He signed on the dotted line.
However, the studio shouldn’t expect him to go down quietly. Just yesterday the actor continued to unload on the studio on Twitter, bemoaning how it fell into what he referred to as a smear campaign and how he finds it “nauseating” working for a studio that does that.
It’ll be interesting to see how everything plays out for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At this point, it’s pretty much certain Disney will not rehire James Gunn back so now it has to deal with the turmoil the decision is wreaking on the crew.
Whenever the Guardians make their way back, the crew may look and sound a lot different. For one, the script may be completely different from what we’ve been accustomed to and second, Drax may not be around anymore. It’s a sad thought to think of but that’s the predicament we’re at with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
