Just as Nioh takes the world by storm, Dark Souls is coming to a close. The next wave of DLC, The Ringed City, is the last expansion planned for the final game in the series. It’s been a wild ten years, full of ups and downs, but if these screenshots show how Dark Souls is coming to an end, then FromSoftware has carved out a gorgeous way to finish strong.

Bandai Namco shared a few concept art pieces along with the in-engine footage. They are dark, loaded with style, and just oozing with monsters waiting to kill you.

Nioh is cool, but there ain’t nothing like the real thing

Nioh is a nice footnote in the history of video gaming as the first game to truly capture the spirit of Dark Souls, but FromSoftware’s revolutionary series deserves a chapter all to itself. I often think that they get misrepresented in discussion, though. Their style often gets talked about less than their challenge, which I find to be horribly backwards, and their difficulty curve is far fairer than most people give them credit for. These are challenging games, but they are not as bad as many have made them out to be.

I mentioned in my Nioh review that I have moved on from games made to emulate Dark Souls, but during their peak, there was nothing like this series anywhere to be found. It was a one-of-a-kind, and it deserves to be respected until the end of time.

…well, maybe not Dark Souls 2.

Dark Souls III: The Ringed City launched for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 28.
