As much as the Defenders was meant to bring all four of the Marvel Netflix characters together, it really ended up being the Daredevil and Iron Fist show featuring Luke and Jessica. That carried right up through to the end of the season, which left us with a hanging question as to whether Matt Murdock would continue to play the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.

With Daredevil season 3 now filming, I’m sure you can guess that Daredevil will live to dare again, but I’ll leave the specifics below the gallery just in case you haven’t checked out Marvel’s Defenders yet or, by chance, read the Daredevil comic arc, “Born Again.” The studio posted yesterday a tweet teasing the next season with a bit of remembrance for the vigilante.

After a climactic four-hero battle against the criminal organization that apparently just wants more life, three of the four defenders escaped the deep hole the Hand had dug. Murdock, meanwhile, stayed down there to be buried in the rubble with his true love, Elektra, not his other true love, Karen. To the best of anyone’s knowledge, Daredevil is a Deaddevil. This newest teaser is a program from Matt Murdock’s funeral, something we could see in the opening moments of the third season.

But in the Defenders’ very last moments, we caught Murdock in the bed of a sick ward, with one Nun asking another to get someone named Maggie.

This cracks the show wide open to start a live-action version of the Daredevil comics storyline, ‘Born Again.’ The series so far has been a setup for that storyline to some degree, with Wilson Fisk vowing to destroy Daredevil and Matt Murdock both. Putting him in that bed all but guarantees it’ll happen. The Maggie the nun was calling for is none other than Mudock’s own mother.

The story will likely be handled a bit differently from the comics. In the books, a heroin-addicted, ex-porn star Karen Page gives up Murdock’s name for one last hit. The Karen in the show hasn’t shown a hint of a fall like that, and that would be a lot to put her through in the space the show has to make that happen. But we’ll likely see Matt’s life torn to pieces by the Kingpin as he tries to recover from his romantic dual suicide at the end of Defenders.

Daredevil season 3 is set to air sometime in 2018.
