Criterion Games' creative director Alex Ward can be a little outspoken at times, so his Twitter page is often a great place for "in the moment" comments. However, this time he has used his account to announce that Criterion's next project will not be another game in the Need for Speed or Burnout series. It won't even be a racing game.
"After over a decade of making racing games it's time to make something new. It is early days thus I have nothing to 'announce' or talk about."
How or what Criterion is planning I have no idea, but it's certainly interesting given that EA turned over complete creative control of the Need for Speed series to the team last summer. Racing is what Criterion Games does and what EA signed them up for, but it seems like development will be handed back to EA Black Box for the time being.
All Alex Ward would add was that a sequel to Black, Criterion's only venture outside of the racing genre, was out of the question, bluntly stating "No Black2 either folks." [sic]
Criterion's last game in the series, 2012's Need for Speed: Most Wanted, was well received by critics. Check out our thoughts here.
EA never released sales figures for the game, but it stated that it out-performed 2011's Need for Speed: The Run. With the lack of comparison to Criterion's 2010 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, something tells me EA didn't enjoy the results of the Criterion brand name on the series.
