Warner Bros. struck gold in 2013 with The Conjuring. The horror movie carried a low budget but was high on scares and thus amassed a huge box office intake and simultaneously kickstarted a franchise. Four years later, The Conjuring movie universe is the first horror franchise to cross $1 billion threshold at the box office worldwide.
This budding horror franchise is led by James Wan, who directed the first two Conjuring flicks while overseeing the other spin-offs.
The Conjuring movie followed the story of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. The first movie briefly explored the story of Annabelle before jumping into its main storyline. Following the success of The Conjuring, Warner Bros. greenlit a movie based on Annabelle which was followed by The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation.
Now all four movies have amassed a global intake over $1 billion, topping every horror franchise. That sum is set to grow more with The Nun in the works. It’ll be based off the demon explored in The Conjuring 2. There was also talk about a Conjuring 3 happening, but only if director James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga returned. Those talks are still up in the air with Wan currently busy shooting the DCEU flick Aquaman.
The landmark box office intake The Conjuring universe has amassed sets the stage for how successful future horror franchises can be if done correctly. The only other franchise to be nearly as successful is the Saw movies ($873 million), but it took seven entries to reach that sum. The Conjuring universe did it with just four movies.
Let’s hope The Conjuring horror universe can continue the scares coming for years to come.
